Ardtun House, Bunessan,
Isle of Mull
Attractions and
Places to Visit
The Isle of Mull has
attractions for all the family, and offers a holiday where wildlife
is around every corner, visitor attractions cater for all ages, and
the whole family has a chance to live a lifestyle far removed from
the hectic urban pressurised existence.
The village of Bunessan is ideally suited to visit not only the
south and west of the Isle of Mull but to use it as a base for car
journeys to places in and around Salen and Craignure. During May,
the sun sets directly across the sea from a point located in the
middle of the village.
The peninsula of Ardtun is ideal for short walks along roadways and,
because the accommodation overlooks the bay, walking into Bunessan
village is a pleasant stroll alongside the sea. The village itself
has a grocery store and a gift shop which are adequate for the
purchase of both food for self-catering accommodation and gifts.
Also in the village there is a restaurant and the hotel which has a
restaurant and bar that are open to non-residents.
Boat and Wildlife Sea Trips on Mull
There are several companies at Fionnphort, only
a few miles drive from Ardtun House, which offer
boat trips to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles. It
is a 45 minute sea journey to Staffa and
Fingal's Cave which is always splendid and
atmospheric with basaltic columns formed 59
million years ago. Puffins can be seen ashore in
season and often Guillemots, Fulmars, Great
Skuas, Eider Ducks, Gannets, Kittewakes, Great
Black-backed gulls, Great Northern Divers and
Razorbills on the water. |

Wildlife on Mull
Again, there are many wildlife tour operators on
the island and we recommend the following
companies as they will collect you directly from
Ardtun House. Bryan at
Wild About Mull conducts Wildlife Trips
around the island and
About Mull Tours is a taxi was well as a
Wildlife Tour Operator. If you would like to go
to Iona then
Mull Magic specialises in Corncrake Tours
from the beginning of May until the end of July. |

Beaches on Mull
The beaches on the
island, especially on the South Coast, close to
Ardtun House, are amongst the most stunning in
the whole of Scotland. Uisken has a long,
unspoilt beach a couple of miles drive away
where the only other person one's likely to see
is a fisherman mending his nets. From here, the
walker can ascend into typical crofting country
and discover a handful of deserted crofting
houses and settlements. |

Walks on Mull
Mull is a fantastic place to take idyllic island walks
on
heather-clad moorland, along
picturesque lochs, glens and the shimmering white
beaches, featured above. Near Fionnphort lies
the tidal island of Erraid, the first land on
which the castaway in Robert Louis Stevenson's
'Kidnapped' came ashore. By timing the tides
right, one can cross to the island and ascend to
the Observation Point which has breathtaking
views of the surrounding area. |

MacKinnons Cave
Steeped in myth and
magic and with great geological and
topographical fascination, the short walk to
MacKinnon’s Cave (Grid ref NM 441323) can be a
testing scramble over muddy ground and a large
boulder beach before the entrance to Abbot
MacKinnon’s cave is reached. This wet track
continues to host many visitors to the Isle of
Mull, hoping to sense some of the mystery
surrounding this beguiling part of the island.
